Thank god they put a big red line otherwise you might get lost in that hallway

I fucking hate these pointless chases in the games .

u/BirdsCubed 13h ago

'Hold up on the analogue stick' simulators. It feels super dated at this point.

66

u/SilverKry 12h ago

Especially with how badly the person you're chasing is animated to where you can see the literal line the devs drew out for it to follow.

That and climbing tf is the point of making me crawl across and up a conveniently glowing grapple area. I remember rage quitting the uncharted game remakes for this since that was 50% of the game

u/Guilty_Ship_6799 13h ago

Yeah. Especially since there's usually no win condition. The target will always rubberband to be way ahead of you until you arrive at the destination you're supposed to be at.

47

u/Plus-Emotion-526 13h ago

Yeah that’s the worst part imo. There’s no stakes.

3

u/LordKutulu 5h ago

But but but, if you hit something a few times you have to start over?

22

u/PM_Me_FunnyNudes 10h ago

That’s why I appreciated the chase in AC2 (might be brotherhood) in one of the secret tombs where you can actually catch him and prevent him from warning the other guards if you do the chase quick enough.

Gives it actual stakes and a win condition and it’s way more exciting for it

Back when Ubisoft actually gave a damn about making good games🙄

Was not a fan of the chases and races in Spiderman - same dev. They seem to love em

yeah because it's easy "content"

Spider-Man kinda made sense as a big focus was utilizing the very unique and well done traversal mechanics.

I mean wouldn’t it be a little disappointing if you had the iconic and extremely well-done web swinging mechanic and all you used it for was going from mission to mission?

As for here, this chase sequence was like 15 seconds and lead to a fight…. Idk why people are getting so worked up about it.

GTA...

u/Valiant_Revan 38m ago

Admittedly, 90% of the missions in GTA are just pointless or boring. Most of your enjoyment comes from the sandbox stuff

I thought that was his senses. If it's just a handhold thing then that's dumb

22

u/That_on1_guy 11h ago

I think its hand holding but using his senses as a coat of paint to make it feel more natural

Like yea, what we're seeing in that red streak is probably a visual representation of the scent that is being left behind that logan is smelling, but its being used as a way to hold your hand incase you lose sight of the guy in red running 10 feet in front of you through what is essentially a 1 way hallway

9

u/Stephen2014 10h ago

Wolverine smell, Witcher sense, crafting view. It's all the same shit design that wore out its welcome 10 years ago.

Also, gotta slow down the chase sequence or players might get overwhelmed. Funny how wolverine jumps like he's on the moon but his sprint is the speed of a casual jog.

43

u/zeppelinism 13h ago

I think its supposed to represent his tracking ability as he has heightened senses like smell, but i get your criticism. A lot of games like to hold your hand with these scenarios.

23

u/JELLOvsPUDDIN 13h ago

I love how the scent trail almost looks like it's ahead of the guy running, like his stench is in front of him. So stupid

10

u/Guilty_Ship_6799 13h ago

his stench would be in front of him. It is still stupid looking though.

Developers have constantly stated that the red line and things like it are necessary because believe it or not there are MANY people who would 100% get lost, and then get frustrated.

Option to turn it off is the best of both worlds though.

14

u/hotmaildotcom1 13h ago

My thoughts exactly. Looks like Assassin's Creed 1.

15

u/Zombii_Man 12h ago

AC1 at least has engaging movement mechanics lol.

14

u/KGB_Panda 10h ago

Also, weren't they actual chase sequences, like if you played well you could catch them early, and if you suck you fail? This chase sequence is just a walking simulator

6

u/Zombii_Man 8h ago

Yep! There's hella videos of dudes planning different, more efficient routes and stuff.

Like this dude goes in the opposite direction in order to cut the chase target off and catch him in under a minute. Great stuff.

The game may not look as pretty as modern games do, but it was designed to be rewarding for players who met the game where it was coming from and engaged with all systems.

Systems driven gameplay is one of those things I'm beginning to miss in these big AAA productions...

Don't think I'll pick it up for $75 but maybe for $40 on sale.

435

u/OverloadedSofa 14h ago

I mean, it’s also playstation only. Can’t say I’ll ever get it now

173

u/controldekinai 13h ago

So lame. I thought we were in a good spot once they started allowing PC release. Personally I'm way more upset about this vs the all-digital future they're selling.

63

u/Sloth_Monk 13h ago

New leadership at Sony is the reason for the change.

58

u/Exile688 12h ago

Amazingly short period between Sony claiming the console war victory and Sony panicking about Steam/Microsoft with no more PC ports and diving head first into digital only.

Like damn, the PSN/Helldivers 2/Steam delisting fiasco must have really upset Sony.

26

u/Atomic_Revival 11h ago

Which is hilarious because Helldivers 2 is one of the few times in gaming a studios incompetence actually made the game better.

The whole account linking thing was supposed to be mandatory day one. But because Arrowhead was struggling to work out bugs and the game had really terrible server issues starting out they were told to implement a bypass so Steam users could play. Their initial struggles are actually one of reason the game took off because the bypass allowed anyone and everyone access. If it stayed required? Nobody would have gave that game a chance on PC.

Meanwhile Sony knew all this. They knew the servers were messed up and Sony knew Arrowhead was struggling to fix things. They knew the game was benefiting from being able to be purchased in places PSN didn't exist. And yet there response was? Remove the bypass and force it on everyone!

Like that's tremendous big brain time right there.

If they have no exclusives, nobody will buy their box, just like xbox is now... they started doing day 1 PC releases for years now.

10

u/SerCharles 13h ago

their games don't really get that low on PC either.

15

u/controldekinai 12h ago

You mean price? That doesn't matter to me much, but I'm not going to buy a console to play its exclusives. If I want a game I dont mind paying full price. They can keep their game discounts. Better for customers to make them available. But they dont care about the customers, obviously

I dunno what it is but the game, at least to me, seems like some low quality cash grab riding on marvel/Wolvie hype rather than actual quality gameplay/storytelling

Im open to see how its like, once released but im very sceptical currently

You didn't see the 10/10 "Chasing a guy" gameplay that all gamers universally love?? Where if you are slightly too far away from the guy you're chasing, it makes you start over and your character says the same lines again?

Why do AAA games all look the same?

23

u/xdoble7x 12h ago

Because the copy the formula that worked on the precious games that were successfull, after a few generations they all look the same

AAA games are just money investments, put XXX millions to copy the thing that made XXXX millions last time

9

u/HeldnarRommar 9h ago

Because they have to follow the formula so that the lowest common denominator of gamers can understand and follow the gameplay

You watched a clip on nothing but a chase sequence on a post titled "A look at wolverine chasing the hand in insomniac's wolverine"

And you still bitch that there isn't gameplay other than that?

Anyone else think this running animation looks janky? He looks heavy, slow.

249

u/UnusuallyShapedChair 14h ago

Adamantium IS heavy.

83

u/Far-Try5352 14h ago

But wolverine is supposed to be very fast

58

u/RenderedCreed 13h ago edited 12h ago

Always seemingly a tough choice for anyone adapting wolverine. He weighs something like 300 lbs. Balancing realism with comic book logic seems to be something they all struggle with regarding wolverine.

74

u/DatDiemDam 13h ago

just make him run fast and fall heavy, that will do.

40

u/Kneecap_Blaster 13h ago edited 11h ago

With the first gameplay trailer highlighting the "stealth" elements, of Wolverine crouching in a bright yellow suit walking silently on a corrugated metal roof up to an enemy in broad daylight, it's probably too late to turn back. That's probably a 3rd of the gameplay lol

5

u/RenderedCreed 13h ago

23

I think the biggest issue is that the shifts between the different animations looks really clunky and pop position for a next gen game.

Yes! Moved almost like the Hulk in Marvels Avengers

18

u/rondo_martin 14h ago

He looks almost exactly like reboot Kratos

4

u/Luna259 13h ago

It does. I was thinking why does he run like that?

4

u/RecklessHusky 12h ago

Yeah. I get that he’s supposed to have weight, but It’s like his body movements are too slow to match the running speed, looks a little floaty.

6

u/ValkyrianRabecca 13h ago

Yeah if Wolverine was chasing someone that he needed dead or captured, I would expect his all fours running

5

u/Co-opingTowardHatred 11h ago

Wolverine doesn't do that.... Sabretooth sometimes does.

because insomniac is behind it, and they have a pretty great track record with the Spiderman games, Im still somewhat open minded. But this clip alone looks terrible. I actually struggle to find something to compliment about it. Movement looks really stiff, guy ahead looks completely artificial and lifeless how they move, the graphics are super generic. And why are we still doing pointless chase sequences, is there really nothing else that devs can come up with? The fact they thought this would have been good promo material is very concerning.

But again insomniac has made some great games, so it's not like they dont know what they are doing. But damn.

9

u/Rockhead_Dynamics 10h ago

Yeah, all I can see is how much better Spider-Man would be at catching the guy.

5

u/Sindica69 10h ago

Yeah same, not looking very good.

6

u/Kells90210 9h ago

This is 20 secs of the showcase not the entire thing. They showed lots of gameplay, the stealth mechanics and how wolverines rage works.

This clip is what this specific person chose to post for whatever reason

It’s a scent trail. That’s why it’s all particles and fades farther from the target.

4

u/rvasko3 6h ago

Well at least you didn't judge the game based on a 20-second snippet that doesn't even remotely feature all that it entails.

3

u/badabingmx 11h ago

It also seems really strange that at a point wolverine got closer and the animation on the ninja went like 150% faster and looked funny.

546

u/42tfish 14h ago

I know this is subjective but this just does not look good or entertaining to me.

I recently heard most Sony games as cinematic action games and that really is true…and I don’t like it.

216

u/ma1butters 14h ago

Yep. Looks like something that's gonna make you start over if you're 25 feet behind him instead of 20 but then magically speed up if you get too close.

79

u/morsomme 13h ago

And the chase sequence is basically hard coded to last a certain time, so it's a running simulator

38

u/ma1butters 13h ago

Yeah. Might as well be another cutscene.

21

u/Dry_Departure_7813 13h ago

I always think, if the devs are so keen on me doing it "this specific way" why don't THEY just play the sodding game

7

u/karai-amai 12h ago

If you had the ability to flex your movement skills, maybe speccing into my different skills to transverse the world, and using the kit you built to solve the problem at hand.

This is just a lazy quick time event

3

u/Dry_Departure_7813 12h ago

Now I'm remembering how on rails every red dead 2 mission is. "mission failed, you went outside the mission zone"

8

u/MediocreSizedDan 13h ago

Fair. I do think the game looks fun overall, but this is definitely a bad clip to suggest that. Chase missions makes some sense in a Spider-Man game where web-swinging is a major part of the gameplay and they want you to get used to it. But like, this is Wolverine. I've....run in video games before....

15

u/thedebatingbookworm 14h ago

I don’t mind that type of game but lately it’s the only type of game that their first part studios have been making and that’s boring as hell. I loved the story of ragnarok but my god was that game play dull at times it’s like I’m someone previously known as the god of war why I do feel like the janitor of war?

→ More replies (6)

5

u/Unabated_Blade 13h ago

All I could think of during the entire segment was that this big dumb chase scene required maybe 6-10 button inputs and holding the joystick forward.

4

u/CommanderFate 12h ago

Agreed, feels too slow, no interesting flow in the movement like in the Spiderman games for example, Wolverine normally can wall jump and traverse on sides to pick up a distance when needed. Here he is just boringly running.

19

u/scarlet25b 14h ago

Your right this does not look good.

Not because it's cinematic action game.

But nothing in this scene makes it feel special. If you told me this was spider man with a Wolverine skin I would believe you.

They should have made Wolverine more of linear game in tight quarters or something to increase action and verocity. The open space and slow speed of Wolverine makes this look like a bore to play.

3

u/Paul_the_sparky 12h ago

The traversal in Spider-Man was fun though. Swinging through the city tailing an escaping car beats the on rails plodding on show here

32

u/Other-Emu1829 14h ago

Of course thats what Sony does. Last of Us. Horizon Zero Dawn. God of war even. Spider-Man too

It's totally fine not liking the style of games, but you also then have to admit the game just isn't for you. Which I know is a cop out thing to say, but I mean how else do you spin it

19

u/fraidei 13h ago

Horizon Zero Dawn has a very compelling gameplay at least.

16

u/rondo_martin 14h ago

I think it's just played out at this point. You can do much more interesting things with an action adventure game and especially a Wolverine game

4

u/TheFergPunk 13h ago

I do wonder if Sony have went to the well one too many times with these set piece heavy cinematic games.

I know there's other types of games they make, but this type is a huge chunk of their output. And maybe the similarities between these games are starting to blend in.

I bet in this game there'll be a climbing section where you're pushing forward and there's no fail state.

→ More replies (9)

4

u/ImportantQuestionTex 13h ago

Eh, I think Last of Us works, GoW is different enough that it feels fresh playing it. Horizon tries to differentiate itself.

But I can't tell the real difference between this gameplay and Uncharted or Spider-Man. And I liked Spider-Man Miles Morales and 2 lol.

10

u/42tfish 14h ago

Oh I’m completely aware they’re not for me. I’m a big gameplay first type of gamer, as such I’m a big souls fan.

I hate this trope, if you can call it that, of having minutes long basically interactive cut scenes, or these super scripted set pieces which appears to be what is in the video.

This game, Uncharted, Spiderman... bah. Scripted sequence -> cutscene -> scripted gameplay. You punch a grunt a couple of times and then press the finisher button to watch a couple seconds of finisher animation, rinse and repeat.

This is why I just don't vibe with any mainline Sony games

red trail to make sure nobody miss it, movement too linear, might as well be a hallway with tricks.

60

u/stigma_wizard 13h ago

Video game companies have gotten so lazy with their wand-wavey "zipline" mechanics.

In Assassin's Creed (not implying that they started the zipline trope, just a notable example), you had to have a special hook for your blade in order to zipline. Nowadays it just seems like whatever the character is holding is adequate to be used to zipline across a map.

11

u/Grigoran 12h ago

I miss when all a character had to do was jump and press the circle button. Miss you, Sly

u/SevroAuShitTalker 10h ago

22

u/Kells90210 9h ago

They literally showed fighting and stealth gameplay, this is what THIS Redditor chose to post.

This is 10% of the showcase

20

u/LeaveMeBeWillYa 9h ago

Judging by the comments here, OP posting the chase part rather than the actual gameplay and your downvote, I'd say this sub has an agenda to make this game look bad.

Don't know why but it's rather sad to see bitching about a game looking bad when they are reacting to a single clip of a part that isn't the major focus of the game

9

u/DiggityDog6 5h ago

Yeah these comments are ridiculously judgmental for what amounts to 10% of the gameplay and probably one single mission in the entire game. Especially considering OP chose to cut off the video the moment that any combat popped up.

I’m probably going to get really hated on, but the content I’ve seen for this game in general doesn’t honestly look that entertaining to me, especially when compared to the Spider-Man games. But yeah, this video in particular doesn’t look that great and I’m really not trying to stir up anything. I love insomniac.

11

u/pratzc07 13h ago

I don't think you will get hated on the more I see the more drab, boring, uninspired and wait for deep sale this game is turning out to be especially for a stacked out September with Onimusha and other titles hitting around the same time.

8

u/Hydra_Kitt 13h ago

I feel you. I think its because Wolverine as a character is more fun to watch than to play because of his ability set. A movie or comic can fast forward traversal but in a game he doesnt really have movement like that. Whereas Spider-Man is ALL traversal.

9

u/Johncurtisreeve 12h ago

That’s honestly exactly how I feel when I first heard it was announced. My first thought was what are they going to do with him? There’s considerably less concepts they can do with him then with Spider-Man in terms of gameplay.

3

u/Hydra_Kitt 12h ago

Right! I know Wolverine has animalistic tendencies in the comics but he still has no traversal and his personal villains aren't really that interesting.

This just makes me want to play Infamous Second Son again tbh. Modern Sony titles just feel so generic and soulless.

Do we really need a bright red illuminated line when he's right f****** in front of you do we really need that kind of hand holding

11

u/throwaway4days484848 14h ago

This entire game is going to be one big hand hold, everything looks so easy and scripted.

Looks like a game I won’t be playing

14

u/Crossdress-Fan- 12h ago

I "love" how he looses all momentum when he jumps out of the wire

3

u/Different-Chance-455 7h ago

Now that you mentioned it, I can't unsee it. It's terrible.

God, I hope you can turn at that weird red trail off. I feel like its kind of lazy game design if you need a glowing trail to tell you where to go.

I like that it's more grounded, but I feel like Wolverine should be as fast as Cap when running at full speed

13

u/Teamawesome2014 13h ago

Doesn't wolverine run on all 4s when he's trying to go fast?

Looks like a generic tech demo

4

u/Electrik_Truk 12h ago

Definitely looks like a video game-y video game.

5

u/alessandrolaera 4h ago

has any of you guys watched the full trailer? I don't think this hate is that deserved tbh

7

u/BeKindPleaseRewind21 13h ago

The handholding red line is a no go for me.

oh wow, yall are miserable

13

u/Dependent-Swimmer-95 11h ago

Eh, this actually does look kinda bad tho. The rest of the game could be perfect and I’d still say this chasing sequence is odd lol

6

u/DiggityDog6 5h ago

Cool but people are acting like this is the entire game. A mission that most likely constitutes 1% of what you’ll be doing in the course of this game = garbage running simulator slop in these people’s minds. It’s actually ridiculous.

7

u/dariojack 7h ago

i am not taking anythign in this thread seriously you idiots are crying as hard as you can over a person running

I was hoping they'd either augment his movement abilities with gadgets to make him more interesting in an open world, or they should've made the game more linear. I was worried about this exact issue and unfortunately, it looks like movement is gonna quite boring and combat will be the only good thing. Bit of a shame coming from the Spider-Man games where just moving around the city on its own was fun.

…wow.. misery loves company

3

u/AYoRocSSB 12h ago

Yeah imma wait for a sale

3

u/Bhazor 10h ago

So AAA still hiding unskippable cutscenes as pressing up on the gamepad gameplay then?

3

u/Low_Boot_1426 9h ago

The red line trailing behind the guy so players don’t get lost and confused is killing me lol

I love action sequences where it's on rails and I can do nothing but press W

3

u/WolfGangKami 7h ago

Holy!! this world is filled with miserable people. These comments suck 😂

u/Writerhaha 4h ago

I’m in.

u/-lxlKHARMAlxl- 9h ago

Holy crap that looks insanely boring. It checks all the generic cliches. Sighs...

Is the gravity different on wolverine world?

Looks bad.

4

u/Neeeeedles 13h ago

Honestly i dont get what about this game looks good

5

u/-FalseProfessor- 12h ago

I just want to point out that the red line is clearly meant to be a scent trail mechanic that fades as the target gets farther away. It makes sense as a thing for Wolverine to have.

5

u/Crossdress-Fan- 7h ago

It doesn't work when the line is ahead of the guy you're chasing

4

u/Loud_Examination_138 8h ago

Wtf this subreddit is fucking miserable. Ill be enjoying the hell out of this day 1...yall stay miserable

6

u/OldRancidSoups 13h ago

Lots of negative takes from random-word-123 accounts. This game looks great to me. Can’t wait to play it.

5

u/Dependent-Swimmer-95 11h ago

Reddit is weird. A lot of people like myself, make accounts and forget to make a username so Reddit gives you one. Once it’s too late you cannot change it at all.

2

u/Glum_Animator_5887 14h ago

So far all we have seen is wolverine running in a straight line , with super standard 3rf person gameplay

3

u/Either-Assistant4610 13h ago

Who, um, this... this doesn't look great.

4

u/Loli_Queen 12h ago

I'm not a linear game or scripted gameplay hater. I loved Uncharted and it's basically that with some arenas in-between. But this doesn't look very good, seems to me you are just pressing forward. This game hasn't intrigued me in any trailer or video I've seen

2

u/Omega_Boost24 13h ago

You'll never find another game as smooth as TLOU2, I'm not a fan but TLOU2 is incredible

2

u/Otherwise-Waltz-2439 13h ago

Uncharted 4 is much more smoother!

2

u/Riverdog123 12h ago

There is 0 gameplay happening

2

u/Chronicle112 12h ago

It's me chasing Sony for a PC release

2

u/Mikel_S 12h ago

It looks nice, but I find it awkward that the "trail" is visible in front of the person you are chasing.

2

u/IllustriousHealth291 12h ago

Looks like Uncharted Lost Legacy

Aka a PS4 GAME

2

u/findaill65 12h ago

I can't be the only one thinking about what should have happened to that rope he swung down on.

2

u/Dremora-Stuff99 12h ago

Looks pretty choppy tbh.

2

u/spicywax94 10h ago

Can't help but think he runs the same way Spiderman does

2

u/orangeawacado 10h ago

Why does he run like my 6 year old?

1

u/Dragonswim 10h ago

Looks like a 90s game

2

u/Codas91 10h ago

Hate that red trail

2

u/ProbablyFear 9h ago

That looks boring as fuck.

2

u/Noxidnevets1990 9h ago

Guy just runs through the wall at the end too 😭
