It will take three weeks for the ship to arrive before the Lincoln can leave. So over 6 more weeks for the crew.

Maybe they shouldn't be there in the first place.

92

u/Adezar 12h ago

Yeah, Conservatives have been at war with America since the New Deal where it was proven that a large government can actually bring stability and prosperity to more people and you don't have to concede everything to a few billionaires that spend all their effort laying people off as fast as they can.

We need a New New Deal with a bit less racism this time.

They literally do think it's Obama's fault, because the deal he did with Iran was so terrible that Trump had to rip it up, and that's why they're at war.

Don't ask me how it makes sense, 'cause it doesn't.

27

u/Otherwise_Carob_4057 11h ago

Trump essentially used the original as a template for his newer deal that is ostensibly a worse version of Obamas when all he had to do was shit talk it and his supporters would have eatin it up. Classic case of dog catching a car.

This is quite literally MAGA's argument. "If Obama and Biden did their job with Iran we wouldn't be in this mess."

64

u/Long_Story42 11h ago

Obama got nuclear inspectors into Iran

Stupid pulled out of JCPOA because he said keeping it would lead to a war.

Sure am glad we dodged that war bullet and the Middle East is more stable and peaceful than ever. 🙄

"The soft Dem's let Iran get too powerful (but also they're very weak) so we must invade them to stop them from gaining access to nuclear weapons (not at all like the last time!)! Thank God Trump was here to stop this runaway mistake by the Dems."

Five years is five too many, though.

was sad to see that a guy who attempted and failed would be dishonorably discharged. what a shitty add on to a mental health crisis.

247

u/Blizzard_One 14h ago

Military attorney here. You can’t be dishonorably discharged unless it’s adjudged following a court-martial conviction (that’s assuming you’re charged with an offense that carries a DD as a possible punishment).

It is possible to be involuntarily discharged via an administrative process, but you can only be discharged with an Honorable, General, or Other than Honorable characterization via that pathway. The GEN and OTH carry some consequences regarding future benefits, but it’s nothing remotely close to the impact a DD can have.

68

u/EasyAcresPaul 14h ago

You sure they won't hem em up on some General Order 1 violation just to make sure that the Sailor going thru it gets punished by a GD or DD for calling attention to this?

In this current climate with Kegsbreath running the show it seems all bets are off.

145

u/Blizzard_One 14h ago

You can never rule out a charging decision, but a UCMJ Article 92 violation (disobeying a lawful order) doesn’t carry an automatic punitive (Bad Conduct or Dishonorable) discharge. Courts-martial are run like federal criminal trials; the sailor would be entitled to free defense counsel representation no matter what his resources.

That means he’d need to plead guilty or be convicted at trial, then the panel (the military term for jury) or military judge (if the sailor elected to be tried by a judge alone) would need to hand down a DD following a sentencing hearing in which the sailor is entitled to put on evidence in extenuation and mitigation to argue for a lesser sentence.

Bottom line: A DD isn’t guaranteed (nor is a conviction) and there are a ton of steps to get to that point.

u/Accomplished-Top9803 13h ago

They never bring “enough” food. They can’t store that much at a time. Instead they use foreign ports and replenishment at sea (RAS) to get the food they need

78

u/Kiyohara 14h ago

Yeah, but the Lincoln had arrived and there was no resupply for a long time. It was in the news and all. They even said they were deployed without being in a port for serval months.

https://news.usni.org/2026/01/19/carrier-lincoln-leaves-south-china-sea-uss-tripoli-back-underway

65

u/SonOfMcGee 14h ago

I believe some of their on-shore support network was damaged by Iranian missile strikes.

Iran hit quite a few American ports and bases in the opening of the war that were downplayed as having skeleton crews and mostly being used for storage. But some were storing vital supplies to keep Navy ships from starving!

27

u/Kiyohara 13h ago

Sure. And a capable Administration would have prepared for that with a supply train coming from elsewhere too. Yes, have good supplies on site before your war machine gets there to alleviate the issue (especially if you're sending them in with their stores bare), but you also have another route coming in so one missile doesn't make the crew starve to death.

Or in this case eat craptastic meals.

17

u/GummyBearGod 14h ago

That's sort of the whole point of a nuclear powered ship - being able to stay at sea indefinitely. They don't need to enter port to replenish food. Underway replenishments of food supplys can happen by plane or helicopter, or via cables connected between ships. A large supply ship will pull up along side the deployed vessel, they match speeds, and then send over heavy cables called span wires that are used to send pallets of supplys between the ships. Think of it like a zipline.

28

u/theycallmeJTMoney 14h ago

Right but the lack of good leadership meant that when there was disruption to established supply chains (you know because it’s a war), the current leadership starting with Hegseth lacks the ability and experience, and frankly competence to pivot and compensate.

This administration was handed the keys to the most logistically successful military in this history of the world but they are so incompetent that they’ve fumbled it by getting us into a war that every military strategist worth their salt advised against.

The decision to send Washington to the region comes after multiple reports of attempts by sailors distraught by the long deployment at sea to jump overboard. Family members of Lincoln’s crew have pressed the Pentagon to bring the carrier back to its San Diego homeport.

But don't worry, it's all worth it for Trump's intended goal of distracting from his Epstein friendship and stock market pump and dump scheme.

If a ship is ever named after the current US president, I hope it's a garbage scow.

214

u/sirthunksalot 14h ago

He is already building a battleship named after himself.

195

u/stevolutionary7 14h ago

He's plastered his name on things already built. and he's made hugemongous promises, but he's never actually built anything.

Somehow, if that thing ever gets beyond a model, 75% of the budget will go to "consulting"

37

u/TheArmchairLegion 14h ago

That’s probably as far as it will get. I read that this battleship thing is huge, and there aren’t the construction/berthing places that can handle it, aside from the one that handles carriers.

17

u/Ok_Philosopher_1313 11h ago

It's also useless, battleships haven't really been used in several decades because they aren't useful in warfare any longer. On top of that the thing uses diesel engines (because nuclear is bad?), and has a railgun that requires so much maintenance it's useless. It's what a moron thinks is cool with no regard toward actual function.

6

u/Dachyshun2 8h ago

Couple details to correct. Trump’s dipshit design didn’t use diesels, it used gas turbine engines like those found on the Arleigh Burke class destroyers. The rail gun doesn’t just require an impractical amount of maintenance; it straight up doesn’t fucking exist. They’re (supposedly) building these instead of the sorely-needed guided missile frigates that our navy doesn’t have and every other navy does. Modern naval warfare is based around aircraft, submarine-launched torpedoes and surface-launched anti-submarine torpedoes, and anti-air + anti-ship missiles. All of those things can be put on small guided missile frigates, aka FFGs. FFGs are becoming commonplace in modern navies because they’re cheaper than larger ships like cruisers and destroyers and can be built cheaply in larger numbers.

If you have an anti-ship missile that can be mounted on most ships, even if only in small quantities on smaller ships, current strategy dictates that it’s better to have more numerous ships with fewer missiles than fewer ships with more missiles. More, smaller hulls means lower operating cost per unit, less crew requirement, more flexibility in where you can have capable warships, and you have more redundancy if one ship gets damaged or destroyed. A swarm of 40 cheap, low value targets each with a dozen missiles individually capable of blowing a large enemy ship to bits is a greater tactical and strategic threat than one or two high value targets with the same number of missiles. Then, when you’re not at war, these cheap little boats are an order of magnitude more economical and useful for patrolling waters and enforcing maritime boundaries/trade routes.

Is it actually being built though? Tbh that was one of his more forgettable proclamations of this term. Haven't heard much about it since.

I'm pretty sure designing and building a whole new class of battleships takes longer than 4 years, so even if it's a dead-serious project, quietly being worked on by a well funded team, odds are pretty good he'll be in the distbin of history already by the time the 1st one gets christened.

u/bloodontherisers 14h ago

Last I read there has been no progress of any type on the ship(s) other than saying that will build it and starting to plan for it. But it sounds like the plan for it is to slow roll it so the next administration can cancel it because the Navy definitely doesn't want it and does want their FFG(X) that they were promised but were canceled to give them a battleship instead.

It only took sailors trying to kill themselves by jumping off the flight deck. What do we have to be proud of again? Our military is supposedly our biggest accomplishment and we cant even run that right amymore.

When Hegseth said the army was going for maximum lethality, I kinda thought that would be applied to the enemy and not their own recruits. But hey what do I know

For additional context, sailors attempting suicide on deployment isnt unique to this one particular deployment. On both of my deployments on a carrier there was always some attempts.

Thats not to say that military shouldnt do more to prevent this, because they 1000% should. Im just pointing out that this is not a new thing. Imo the only reason its in the media is how unpopular this war is.

This is much worse than most news agencies are reporting. The USS George Washington is the center of American deterrence in the INDOPACOM theatre. Banishing it to CENTCOM hell in the middle east sends a signal to China that the United States is too overstretched to actually intervene if the Chinese try something in the Taiwan straight.

CENTCOM already used up all of INDOPACOM's munitions, now they are taking the USS George Washington CSG away from the 7th fleet.

Unbelievable. We now have zero supercarrier assets stationed in the Pacific. And the USS George Washington will take at least 3 weeks to even relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln.

This is a generational embarassment for the USN and the DoD and the country as a whole.

I feel for those poor sailors on the USS Abraham Lincoln—at least they'll get some relief a month from now. It's just unfortunate that it might cost Taiwan everything.

It's impossible to war game out the exact details, but it would be an absolute disaster—that's for certain.

The only hope would be the USN's massive advantage in submarine warfare.

37

u/kurizma 14h ago

like the US Military's massive advantage in EVERYTHING else? This administration is a complete fucking joke. They've gotten rid of all the competent leaders and promoted sycophants and gym bros.

6

u/demiurge_abraxas 14h ago

I generally agree with you, but the submarine force is substantially less affected by the depletion of munitions stockpiles, rise of drone warfare, and the USN's weakness against A2/AD than almost any other US military asset.

But they are still being commanded by the same idiots in charge of the Iran war debacle. In that we are in absolute agreement.

66

u/ruet_ahead 14h ago

Normally I would say, and have said, hundreds of years of institutional knowledge in littoral and blue-water combat operations would make it a route on the US side. Sadly, I'm not so sure any more.

48

u/demiurge_abraxas 14h ago

You'd really think so wouldn't you? And up until the past couple of years I would have agreed with you.

At least the Chinese general staff was also recently purged. So it's basically even at this point.

Maybe with a slight USN advantage due to how laughably corrupt the Chinese military turned out to be with those documents released several months ago.

The American military-industrial complex has plenty of graft and grift, don't get me wrong. But I don't think we are quite at the level of filling ICBM's with water and selling the fuel on the black market yet.

28

u/ruet_ahead 14h ago edited 13h ago

I definitely think that current events are casting a misleading shadow over US military capability. The morons in charge picked the wrong fight against the wrong enemy with the wrong equipment at the wrong time. The Navy has had some issues bubbling up for years though.

EDIT: The plural of event is not event's.

14

u/demiurge_abraxas 14h ago

I would tend to agree. All of the capability in the world won't save you from poor leadership and an impossible geopolitical situation.

There is a reason why no previous administration has ever pulled this shit on Iran and it isn't because they didn't want to—it's because anyone with two brain cells could have told them this is exactly how the situation would play out.

At least it's given the military the kick in the ass it needs to fix it's magazine depth and munitions production problems, though.

Now if only the USN could remember how to build anything other than the Arleigh Burke.

trump is neutralizing carrier groups one by one. These misadventures have no strategic value for the US, in fact it weakens the US in every way. If Putin and Xi had a wishlist, this is what it would look like.

With regards to Taiwan, Elon Musk and his mother are likely spying for Beijing. Last year, for some inexplicable reason, Hegseth briefed Musk on the US plans to defend Taiwan. Highly classified, and also highly technical, details, which Musk had no legitimate reason to see. If China does invade Taiwan, the US has already essentially capitulated.

11

u/TheNCGoalie 9h ago

Makes sense considering the whole announcement of SpaceX and that super giga chip fab in Texas. Get that online, help China destroy Taiwan whose fabs are rigged to be destroyed in that scenario. Suddenly you’re the most valuable chip producer out there.

My MOS was in combat and I’ve done and seen things that gives me nightmares til this day. I’ve lost brothers and sisters in combat, to PTSD, to the government failing to support us post service.

The audacity that this lying idiot states that “veterans with PTSD aren’t strong enough” when he dodged the draft 5 times due to f******* bone spurs is astounding.

I'm trying to think of a point where US soldiers have been abandoned so completely by their country.

The commander in chief started the war without any plan or preparation in place, for false reasons; and has been lying for months about the status of the war, including whether it's being fought at all. The DOD won't even notify families when they die. And by regularly committing war crimes are being put in exceptional danger for, again, no good fucking reason.

I can think of instances where one or a few of these things were happening but not all at once. Definitely can't think of another instance where the president tried to will victory day into existence repeatedly by announcing it.

How typical of this regime and the inept "leadership" from these sycophants.....

They put a ship out there, no thought about the humans onboard, they can't end the war they started and just leave that ship out there, cause they're too stupid and ignorant to realize why that's a bad idea, until the news of bottomed out morale makes headlines, news they most definitely heard before we did, and then they send a relief ship for them.

They didn't want to send a relief ship cause they wanted to look tough and look how that turned out, in the most predictable way possible as always, but somehow it catches them all by surprise, fucking pathetic.

The most annoying part is the people in that ship likely mostly voted for Trump and this bullshit and they'll find a way to protect their cognitive dissonance and blame anyone else for it all and will vote for him again when he runs for a third term.....

Trump's record on military and vets

• Only 1 Trump in America has served in the military (Fred Trump, Don's brother, served in the Air National Guard); this spans 5 generations, and every branch of the family tree. In fact, the reason his grandfather immigrated to America was to avoid military service. • Children of deployed US troops will no longer get automatic American citizenship if born overseas during deployment. This includes US troops posted abroad for years at a time (August 28, 2019) • On August 2, 2019, Trump requisitioned military retirement funds towards border wall • On July 31, 2019, Trump ordered the Navy rescind medals to prosecutors who were prosecuting war criminals • In July 2019, Trump denied a United States Marine of 6 years entry into the United States for his scheduled citizenship interview (Reported July 17, 2019) • Trump made the U.S. Navy Blue Angels violate ethics rules by having them fly at his July 4th political campaign (July 4, 2019) • Trump demanded US military chiefs stand next to him at 4th of July parade (reported July 2, 2019) • In June, 2019, Trump sent troops to the border to paint the fence for a better "aesthetic appearance" (June 7, 2019) • Trump used his D-Day interview at a cemetery commemorating fallen US soldiers to attack a Vietnam veteran (June 6, 2019) • Trump started his D-Day commemoration speech by attacking a private citizen (Bette Midler, of all people) (reported on June 4th, 2019) • Trump made his 2nd wife, Marla Maples, sign a prenup that would have cut off all child support if Tiffany joined the military (reported on June 4th, 2019) • On May 27, 2019, Trump turned away US military from his Memorial Day speech because they were from the destroyer USS John S. McCain • Trump ordered the USS John McCain out of sight during his visit to Japan (May 15, 2019). The ship's name was subsequently covered. (May 27, 2019) • Trump pardoned war criminals (May, 2019) • Trump purged 200,000 veterans healthcare applications (due to known administrative errors within VA’s enrollment process and enrollment system) (reported on May 13, 2019) • Trump deported a spouse of fallen Army soldier killed in Afghanistan, leaving their daughter parentless (April 16, 2019) • On March 20, 2019, Trump complained that a deceased war hero didn't thank him for his funeral • He refused to sign his party's funding bill, which shut down the government, and forced a branch of the military to go without pay. This branch of military was forced to work without pay, otherwise they would be AWOL. However, his appointees got a $10,000 pay raise (Dec 22, 2018 – Jan 25, 2019) • He didn't pay the Coast Guard, forcing service members to rely on food pantries (Jan 23, 2019) • He banned service members from serving based on gender identity (Jan 22, 2019) • He denied female troops access to birth control to limit sexual activity (on-going. Published Jan 18, 2019) • He tried to deport a marine vet who is a U.S.-born citizen (Jan 16, 2019) • When a man was caught swindling veterans pensions for high-interest “cash advances," Trump's Consumer Financial Protection Bureau fined him $1. As a reminder, the Trump administration's goal was to dismantle the CFPB, installing Mick Mulvaney as the director, who publicly stated the bureau should be disbanded. (Jan 26, 2019) • He called a retired general a 'dog' with a 'big, dumb mouth' (Jan 1, 2019) • He increased privatization of the VA, leading to longer waits and higher taxpayer cost (2018) • He finally visited troops 2 years after taking office, but only after 154 vacation days at his properties (Dec 26, 2018) • He revealed a covert Seal Team 5 deployment, including names and faces, on Twitter during his visit to Iraq (Dec 26, 2018) • Trump lied to deployed troops that he gave them a 10% raise. He didn't give them a 10% raise (Dec 26, 2018). He initially tried to give the military a raise that was lower than the standard living adjustment. This was before Congress told him that idea wasn't going to work. Then after giving them the raise that Congress made him, he lied about it pretending that it was larger than Obama's. It wasn't. • He fired service members living with HIV just before the 2018 holidays (Dec 19, 2018-present) • He tried to slash disability and unemployment benefits for Veterans to $0, and eliminate the unemployability extrascheduler rating (Dec 17, 2018) • He got three Mar-a-Lago guests to run the VA (unknown start - present, made well-known in 2018) • He called troops on Thanksgiving and told them he's most thankful for himself (Thanksgiving, 2018) • He urged Florida to not count deployed military votes (Nov 12, 2018) • While in Europe commemorating the end of WWI, he didn't attend the ceremony at a US cemetery due to the rain - but other world leaders went anyway (Nov 10, 2018) • He used troops as a political prop by sending them on a phantom mission to the border and made them miss Thanksgiving with their families (Oct-Dec, 2018) • He stopped using troops as a political prop immediately after the election. However, the troops remained in muddy camps on the border (Nov 7, 2018) • Trump changed the GI Bill through his Forever GI Act, causing the VA to miss veteran benefits, including housing allowances. This caused many veterans to run out of food and rent. “You can count on us to serve, but we can’t count on the VA to make a deadline,” one veteran said. (reported October 7, 2018) • Trump doubled the rejection rate for veterans requesting family deportation protections (July 5, 2018) • Trump deported active-duty spouses (11,800 military families face this problem as of April 2018) • He forgot a fallen soldier's name (below) during a call to his pregnant widow, then attacked her the next day (Oct 23-24, 2017) • He sent commandos into an ambush due to a lack of intel, and sends contractors to pick them up, resulting in a commando being left behind, tortured, and executed. (Trump approved the mission because Bannon told him Obama didn't have the guts to do it) (Oct 4, 2017) • He blocked a veteran group on Twitter (June 2017) • He ordered the discharge of active-duty immigrant troops with good records (2017-present) • He deported veterans (2017-present) • He said he knows more about ISIS than American generals (Oct 2016) • He said vets get PTSD because they aren't strong (Oct 3, 2016) (note: yes, he said it's 'because they aren't strong.' He didn't say it's 'because they're weak.' This distinction is important because of Snopes) • Trump accepted a Purple Heart from a fan at one of his rallies and said: “I always wanted to get the Purple Heart. This was much easier.” (Aug 2, 2016) • Trump attacks Gold Star families - Myeshia Johnson--gold star widow, Khan family--gold star parents, etc. (2016-present) • Trump sent funds raised from a January 2016 veterans benefit to the Donald J Trump Foundation instead of veterans charities (the foundation has since been ordered shut because of fraud) (Jan, 2016) • Trump said "I felt that I was in the military in the true sense because I dealt with those people" because he went to a military-style academy and that he has "more training militarily than a lot of the guys that go into the military". (2015 biography) • For a decade, Trump sought to kick veterans off of Fifth Avenue because he found them unsightly nuisances outside of Trump Tower. “While disabled veterans should be given every opportunity to earn a living, is it fair to do so to the detriment of the city as a whole or its tax paying citizens and businesses?” - 1991 • Trump dodged the draft 5 times by having a doctor diagnose him with bone spurs.

Tack this on

  • He sent commandos into an ambush due to a lack of intel, and sends contractors to pick them up, resulting in a commando being left behind, tortured, and executed. (Trump approved the mission because Bannon told him Obama didn't have the guts to do it) (Oct 4, 2017)

  • Trump said "I felt that I was in the military in the true sense because I dealt with those people" because he went to a military-style academy and that he has "more training militarily than a lot of the guys that go into the military". (2015 biography)
  • For a decade, Trump sought to kick veterans off of Fifth Avenue because he found them unsightly nuisances outside of Trump Tower. “While disabled veterans should be given every opportunity to earn a living, is it fair to do so to the detriment of the city as a whole or its tax paying citizens and businesses?” - 1991
  • Trump dodged the draft 5 times by having a doctor diagnose him with bone spurs.
