There is a very specific type of psychological thriller that doesn't just rely on a cheap shock value twist, but actually completely recontextualizes every single scene that came before it. The kind of movie where the moment it ends, you realize you need to watch it all over again just to see the hidden clues you missed the first time.

The Sixth Sense is obviously the most famous example of this, but I think Shutter Island executes it flawlessly. Once you understand the reality of Teddy's situation, going back and watching the subtle glances between the guards, the doctors' patronizing tone, and the physical impossibility of certain scenes makes it feel like an entirely different movie on the second viewing.

Arrival also does this beautifully in the sci-fi space. The revelation about the timeline completely changes the emotional weight of the opening sequence. It turns a movie about alien contact into a devastating, beautiful story about grief and acceptance.

It takes brilliant writing and incredibly tight editing to leave breadcrumbs that are completely invisible on a first watch, but glaringly obvious on the second.

What are your favorite movies that fundamentally change and become infinitely better on a second viewing once you know the ending?

For me it’s Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. I wasn’t a fan at all of the Twilight movies, I thought they were both terrible in them.

Then I saw Good Times and Personal Shopper. Robert was absolutely amazing in it and Kristen too, I was totally wowed! Now I see every movie Robert is in, Kristen not as much, but watch her movies if they are my favorite kind. I’m really interested in seeing her in The Wrong Girls for example.

Honestly, I think the Tarzan film actually would have lent itself to a live action version really well. A lot of the main characters are human, it would be a good chance to bring back that awesome soundtrack, and the setting would look awesome.

That said they would need to do it on location. I’m thinking inspired by Out of Africa or something like that. Practical effects would be great too with some awesome cinematography.

I’m just kind of sad they didn’t end up doing this one. What do you think?

I just listened to the soundtrack today which gave me this idea.

I think Obsession is a really good example of this. The "be careful what you wish for" narrative is a tale as old as time, and there are many stories out there where a person wants their crush to love them and then gets uncomfortable when they love them too much. There's a Shrek Halloween short that's about roughly the same thing. Obsession though, is a phenomenal movie, taking its premise and making it much darker than a lot of the things that are similar to it. It always manages to be surprising, disturbing, and deeply uncomfortable.

Whiplash is another example. It's just a movie about a guy with a really mean teacher. But again, it manages to be really tense and interesting. Fletcher is such an interesting character. It's basically a masterpiece.

I think I’d have to go with The Last of the Mohicans

The score, the scenery and the revenge. It is all just the perfect storm. I remember even watching it as a kid and loving the soundtrack.

I think the score is one of my top played songs on Spotify still, and I’d say it’s still one of the best, if not the best, movie scores to date.

I will have to say for me it was "Muriel's Wedding"

I was expecting a fun and campy movie with ABBA songs and her search to find a husband and of course... the wedding!

What I didn't expect was pretty much everything after the wedding (I guess the director was showing us the reality of the 'happily ever after') and that last act with Muriel coming to terms with her mother Betty taking her own life and also facing up to her own failings and problems that cascaded from her own bad decisions and her perpetual lying.

While I do love the ending of Muriel owning up to her mistakes and starting to repay the money she stole from her family (even if her dad was a wee bit of a bastard) as well as asking for (and receiving) Rhonda's forgiveness. But boy! It was one hell of a roller coaster ride getting their as well!

Hey guys, I watched Nightcrawler, then Prisoners, then Zodiac and then End of Watch. All good movies and I didnt even watch ONE before!!! (!!) My favorite is probably Nightcrawler. Such a weird movie, never seen anything like it. Then End of Watch or Zodiac and then Prisoners. Prisoners was wild and Hugh Jackman was... awesome! Anyways...

Which actor should I watch next and which movies would you recommend?
